Anal fistula or fistula in ano is an abnormal tunnel with one opening in the anal canal and the other outside the anal canal. Fistula in ano is caused generally because of an unhealed anal abcess. A person with fistula in ano will experience, pain, oozing pus or even leaking stool, sometimes. Ayurveda has a treatment for this disorder as well. Kshara Sutra, a seton thread, is medicated with organic alkalis, repeatedly coated on the 15–21 times. Apart from this, natural antibiotics like haridra powder, guggulu, etc are used to make Kshara sutra as well.
The thread and the coated drugs together cut, curet, drain, and clean the fistulous tract, thus initiating healing of the tract/wound. This also acts as the antiseptic and fibrotic agent to heal. Healing starts with the deeper tissues and moves towards the periphery.
The treatment is done under local anaesthesia, and the duration of the treatment depends on the severity of the condition.
