‘Kizhi’ in Malayalam means bolus, or a bundle. The entire idea of kizhi is to tie medication in a muslin cloth and treat eligible patients for their ailments. Kizhi is part of the Swedana Karma Therapy. There are a few kinds of kizhi therapies one of which is Navara Kizhi which is based on medicated heat fomentation. Navara kizhi is also known as shastika shali pinda sweda.
A special type of brown rice which is harvested in 60 days, is cooked along with milk and herbs. It is then bundled up in a muslin cloth and are rubbed on the body during massage to generate heat which provides relief to the stiff and swollen muscles. The therapy makes you sweat because of the medicinal components in the bolus and its temperature. It also relaxes the muscles, and increases blood supply.
