Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica is caused due to excess pressure on the sciatic nerve by the surrounding tissues. The nerve might be affected inside or outside the spinal canal as it extends to the foot. The pain also extends from the spine to foot.
It is caused due to degenerative disc, spinal injury, obesity pregnancy or trauma etc. Some other causes include:
- A Herniated Or Slipped Disc: It is the most common cause of sciatic pain which causes pressure on the sciatic nerve. It is caused when a disc in your is relocated or damaged.
- Piriformis Syndrome: Piriformis muscle lies deep in the buttocks. When this small muscle becomes tight and spasms it leads to putting the pressure on the sciatic nerve and irritating the sciatic nerve which ultimately causes sciatica.
- Spondylolisthesis: It occurs when vertebra(bone) slips forward on to the vertebra beneath it. It narrows the opening through where the sciatic nerve exits.
- Spinal Stenosis: It narrows the spinal canal which puts pressure on the Sciatic nerve and finally leads to sciatic pain.
- Degenerative Disk: This is the condition where intervertebral disc starts degenerating with increasing age or due to some pathology. It is a change in the shape and function of the disc. It finally results in a bulging disc or a herniated disc where the pain starts travelling down to the leg.

By using flour, a small four-sided leak-proof enclosure is made and placed on his waist. A customised ayurvedic oil with a lukewarm temperature is poured into the enclosure. The temperature of the oil is maintained by changing and reheating for every 5 minutes continuously. This continues for almost half an hour. If this part of the treatment is done for the day, the area is gently massaged. The course is continued for 5 to 7 days as suggested by Ayurveda doctor.
Meru Chikitsa: Meru Chikitsa is an ancient Ayurveda procedure developed thousands of years ago. As age increases dryness in the discs also increases which result in the reduction of shock absorbing quality of the discs. Meru Chikitsa- ‘Meru‘ means ‘spine’ and ‘Chikitsa‘ means ‘treatment’, it deals with the problems related to the spine and its structures.
